The Bronte Sisters

On the 30th of July Emily Bronte was born. Perhaps you know this writer, perhaps, you’ve just heard of the Brontës (/ˈbrɒntiz/).

Let’s cover some curiosities about them!

THREE WRITERS

Three sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne are famous poets and novelists.

They were born at the beginning of the 19th c. (1816, 1818, 1820 respectively) and at that time almost all female writers used male

PEN NAMES.

Of course: Charlotte was Currer, Emily – Ellis, Anne – Action (the first letters of their real names) and the surname was Bell. So, their fake initials coincided with their real ones: C.B., E.B., A.B.

When they were kids, their mother PASSED AWAY (Anne was only one year old). Shortly after that they lost their two older sisters.

All three sisters enjoyed rather short lives.

Charlotte died when she was 38, Emily – 30, Anne – 29.

Their father, he remained a widow after his wife’s death, survived his entire family… Such a sad life…

BTW, the sisters had a brother, Branwell, and all four were very close.

CHARLOTTE

Charlotte Bronte is well known for her novel “Jane Eyre”.

EMILY

Emily’s most famous novel is

“Wuthering Heights”.

  • Anne only wrote two novels “Agnes Grey” and “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall”.
  • Emily was very close to her sister Anne.
  • It’s curious that Charlotte married Arthur BELL (!) Nicholls

(check their pen names:)

PEN NAME – a name used by a writer instead of their real name.

TO PASS AWAY – to die.

Have you read any of their books?

Have you watched any movies based on their books?
If you have, did you like them?
I’ve read Jane Eyre and watched one movie.
